Why Russell Wilson must cede control of Denver's offense

With Sean Payton as his new head coach, Russell Wilson must immediately hand over the offensive reins. The Broncos QB reportedly has balked at doing so recently.

"According to multiple league officials, in recent years with the Seahawks and Broncos, Wilson wanted too much say in the offense, preferring a pocket-passing scheme similar to Tom Brady's and Aaron Rodgers' rather than one that highlighted his mobility," wrote the Athletic's Jeff Howe.

Wilson's focus on emulating Brady and Rodgers in Denver hasn't played to his strengths, specifically his ability to scramble and extend plays with his legs.

Denver's scoring offense was the NFL's worst, only scoring 287 points, and it was 26th in first downs (166). In 15 starts, Wilson was sacked a career-high 55 times, tied for the most in the league and posted a career-low 84.4 passer rating, 27th in the NFL.

Denver is banking on Payton, a well-regarded offensive mind, to revitalize a punchless offense.

When New Orleans hired Payton in 2006, the Saints went from 31st in scoring offense in 2005 to fifth in 2006. In 15 seasons under Payton, New Orleans' scoring offense finished in the top 10 or better 12 times.

Former Saints QB Drew Brees, who made 12 Pro Bowls under Payton's tutelage, recently touted his former coach, explaining why he can save Wilson and allow him to thrive.

"To me, this is set up to be Wilson's prime, especially with Sean Payton and a system built around him," Brees told ESPN's Ed Werder.

Denver could make a quick turnaround, but Wilson must trust Payton and cede the offensive controls.
