Will Steelers sign Watt brother with latest vacancy?

The Steelers may be looking to add another Watt brother to their roster after news of a surprising vacancy last week.

Undrafted free-agent FB Monte Pottebaum retired during the beginning stages of Pittsburgh's training camp and now the team doesn't have a true fullback on their roster.

Could FB Derek Watt make a return to the Steel City?

It's a position the Steelers have typically had filled and they are clearly open to ideas as they have been experimenting with guard Kendrick Green at the position. Connor Heyward is also an option, but he is more of a hybrid player than a stereotypical fullback.

Watt played for Pittsburgh for the past three seasons (2020-22) so he already has knowledge of the playbook. The 30-year-old totaled just 48 yards and touchdowns during the span but also served as a special teams captain.

The Steelers love their family ties as well. So, reuniting him with his brother T.J. Watt, who he still lives close to, would only add to his case.

Watt would likely come at a very cheap price with the 2023 season right around the corner and is reportedly still in football shape.

It feels like it would be a low-risk signing and trying him out in the preseason doesn't necessarily mean he'll make the 53-man roster. But it would be difficult to cut him after teasing a potential reunion with his brother.
