A depth player on the Dallas Stars’ roster is a little lighter in the wallet today.
On Thursday, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that forward Mason Marchment has been fined $5,000 for interference on Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe.
The incident happened late in the second period in the game between the Leafs and Stars on Wednesday night, when Marchment hit an unsuspecting McCabe after the Leafs blueliner made a play on the puck.
McCabe was cut on the play, and he and Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe were both visibly upset at the fact there was no penalty on the play. The Leafs ended up handing the Stars a 5-4 loss, ending Dallas’ four-game win streak.
The dollar amount is the maximum allowable under the current collective bargaining agreement. The fine is put into the NHL Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
This is not the first time Marchment had to pay a fee for his endeavors. Last season, the former Leaf had to pay a $2,000 fine for violating NHL Rule 64 (diving/embellishment). The incident happened just over a week after Marchment was issued a warning for embellishment.
So far this season, the 28-year-old has scored 16 goals and 23 assists in 50 games. He is on pace to surpass his 47-point career-high that he set with the Florida Panthers during the 2021-22 season.
In 209 career games, Marchment has totaled 48 goals and 80 assists, including registering nine points in 28 playoff games.
The Stars (31-14-6) are scheduled to visit the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday afternoon, finishing their three-game road trip through the Atlantic Division. Dallas is tied for first in the Central Division with the Colorado Avalanche, 14 points clear of ninth-place.
