Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond turned on the jets to score his 21st goal of the season in the second period of Friday’s game against the Ottawa Senators.

After carrying the puck out of the defensive zone, Raymond fed a streaking Jake Walman on the left side before darting toward the Ottawa net. Raymond managed to find some separation from backchecking Senators forward Tim Stützle as Walman unleashed a laser of a shot in the direction of goaltender Mads Sogaard.

Playing in his first National Hockey League game, the 21-year-old Sogaard obstructed most of Walman’s blast … but not enough. The puck barely skittered through the 6’7″ goaltender and lay exposed in the crease for Raymond to tap into the yawning cage.

Walman picked up his first point in a Red Wings sweater with the lone assist on Raymond’s goal, which tied the game at 1–1 with 2:18 gone in the second period. The 26-year-old defenseman now has seven points (three goals, four assists) in 38 games split between the Red Wings and St. Louis Blues this season.

Raymond, 20, leads all NHL rookies with 51 points (21 goals, 30 assists) in 68 games with the Red Wings this year. With his goal on Friday, Raymond moved into a tie with Howie Glover for the 15th-most goals by a Red Wings rookie in franchise history.

The Red Wings originally acquired Walman from the Blues on trade deadline day as part of the deal that sent Nick Leddy to St. Louis. The Blues also traded Oskar Sundqvist and a 2023 second-round pick to Detroit in exchange for the services of Leddy and Luke Witkowski.

Austin Watson has the lone goal for Ottawa on Friday. The Senators and Red Wings remain tied at one with less than half of the second period still to play at Little Caesars Arena.
