Atletico Madrid's Luis Suarez tests positive for COVID-19, will miss Barcelona clash

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez will have to wait for his opportunity to score versus his former club.

In a statement translated by a report from Alex Kirkland of ESPN, the Uruguayan Football Association confirmed that the 33-year-old tested positive for COVID-19 during the current international break.

"The Uruguayan football association reports that swab tests have been performed on all members of the National Team, and the players Luis Suarez and Rodrigo Munoz and team official Matias Faral have tested positive for COVID-19, while the other members of the party have tested negative," the AUF explained.

"The three are all in good health and the pertinent measures have been implemented."

Because of the positive test result, Suarez will miss Tuesday's World Cup qualifier versus Brazil and Saturday's La Liga game between Atletico and Barcelona.

Suarez completed an emotional move from Barcelona to Atleti in September, a transfer that left him in tears.

Suarez also can't play in Atletico Madrid's Champions League match against Lokomotiv Moscow on Nov. 25. His status for the league game versus Valencia on Nov. 28 is unknown.

Atletico sit third in the La Liga table and second in Group A of the Champions League after three match days in that competition. Suarez has netted five league goals for his new club since the start of the 2020-21 campaign.
