Canada secures spot in 2022 World Cup with 4-0 win vs. Jamaica

Canada secured its spot in the 2022 World Cup for the first time in 36 years with a 4-0 win over Jamaica in a qualifying match Sunday.

Entering Sunday, Canada had a three-point lead in the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) World Cup qualifying standings. The win over Jamaica guarantees that Canada will finish no worse than third when qualifying comes to an end Wednesday, regardless of the team's result against Panama.

Cyle Larin got things started for Canada on Sunday with a goal just over 12 minutes into the match.

Tajon Buchanan added another goal just before halftime, Junior Hollett scored one in the 82nd minute and an own goal from Jamaica's Adrian Mariappa in the final minutes rounded out the scoring.

Canada's only loss in this round of qualification came Thursday against Costa Rica. Midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye picked up a pair of yellow cards in the first half of that match, and Costa Rica managed to win 1-0 against the 10-men squad of Canada. In the team's other 12 qualifying matches, Canada won eight and played to a draw in four.

United States and Mexico currently sit second and third place in the CONCACAF standings with 22 points each. United States will play Panama later on Sunday.
