Tottenham Hotspur have initiated contact with Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie over a January move, according to CalcioMercato via Football Insider.

The report claims Spurs have made ‘initial moves’ to get a deal done for the American international. His contract with Juventus runs until 2025 but the report states that the Turin club would be open to selling him due to the lack of game time.

The report goes on to confirm that Spurs have ‘made enquiries’ and are considering ‘tabling a bid’ in the upcoming transfer window.

So far this season, the midfielder has benefited from Paul Pogba’s injuries, but if the Frenchman were fit, his first-team opportunities would be limited.

Tottenham has long been linked with the American midfielder. The rumours began in January and continued into the summer, with reports claiming that Fabio Paratici was pushing for the American. At the time, it was claimed that a fee of around £34 million would have been sufficient to sign him, but Juventus ultimately decided to keep him after new signing Paul Pogba suffered a serious injury.

Former MLS star Herculez Gomez recently told ESPN that ‘Conte has wanted’ Mckennie for a long time and that he is the type of player who is ‘made for the Premier League.’

Former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson has also backed Spurs to sign him as he believes he would improve their midfield. He told Football Insider:

“West McKennie is a player I like. He is someone who would fit Conte’s style of play. He has the right attitude and physical attributes.

“I was very impressed with him in the World Cup. Spurs are no longer looking for cheap buys. They are looking for top players who are going to make a major impression on the team.”
