Diego Simeone signs Atletico Madrid extension through 2024

Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone could've become one of the most sought-after managers on the market after leading the club past Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona to win the 2020-21 La Liga title, his second while in charge at Atleti.

Instead, he's staying put for now.

The club announced Thursday that Simeone has put pen to paper on a contract extension that runs until June 30, 2024 and past the scheduled conclusion of the 2023-24 European season. Staffers Oscar Ortega, Pablo Vercellone, Nelson Vivas and Hernan Bonvinvini also extended their deals.

Simeone reacted to the news via Twitter:

Simeone first joined Atletico in December 2011 and is the winningest coach in the club's history with 316 victories. He's guided Atletico to eight total titles during his tenure, and his side was the UEFA Champions League runner-up for 2013–14 and 2015–16.

"With this contract extension, we continue our exciting project with Diego Pablo Simeone," the club ended its statement. "Fantastic news for the Atleti family."
