Belgium Keeper Will Move to Premier League Club On a Permanent Transfer

The 31-year-old goalkeeper is set to move to Forest and become the third goalkeeper the club has signed this season.

Sels has made 19 appearances for Strasbourg this season, conceding 24 goals and keeping three clean sheets.

Ornstein confirmed that the medical is taking place this afternoon and that the goalkeeper is travelling to the UK.

Returning to England

Sels has played in England before, when he was under contract at Newcastle United from 2016 to 2018.

He made nine appearances for Newcastle United in their 2016/17 title-winning Championship season, keeping four clean sheets.

However, when Newcastle got promoted to the Premier League, Sels was loaned out to R.S.C. Anderlecht on a season-long loan.

The following summer, in 2018, Sels secured a move to Strasbourg, where he has played ever since.

Third Time Lucky for Matz Sels

As mentioned – Forest have already used Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos this season. However, both have consistently underperformed, leaving owner Evangelos Marinakis in a tricky situation.

Sels’ arrival will mean they have six first-team goalkeepers at the club. However, Ethan Horvath is reportedly on his way to Cardiff City, according to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph.

‘Keen to play in the Premier League’

Ornstein announced that the “star keeper” has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Sels is reportedly “keen to play in the Premier League” and will be in contention to start Forest’s match against AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, January 4.

The Tricky Trees had looked at other goalkeeping options, such as Koen Casteels, according to Ornstein. However, they were unable to agree a deal with Wolfsburg.
