Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow was hospitalised following a bad bout of coronavirus, reports the Sky Sports.
Darlow, who competes with Martin Dúbravka for minutes between the sticks at St. James’ Park, was knocked off his feet by COVID-19, despite being in prime physical condition.
The 30-year-old, speaking to Sky Sports, provided an update on his condition, while also sharing his desire for his experience to serve as an example of the seriousness of the virus.
“I had to go to hospital last week which was pretty awful – but I’m slowly improving now despite still feeling a bit rough. This shows the virus is still going about and we still need to be careful with it.”

Darlow’s experience goes a long way to explaining why it is still necessary for the public to remain vigilant, despite the loosening of COVID restrictions.
If a professional footballer ends up in hospital as a result of contracting coronavirus, it could happen to anyone.
As for Darlow himself, we hope that he makes a speedy recovery and is able to rejoin the Newcastle squad as soon as possible.
As is mentioned in the report by Sky Sports, Mark Gillespie and Freddie Woodman were also forced to self-isolate following close contact with Darlow.
However, they have since tested negative and will be free to rejoin the squad for training.
