Tottenham Hotspur made a significant signing on deadline day last summer, bringing in Welsh talent Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest.

Securing the versatile forward on a six-year contract for a substantial fee of €55 million, Spurs aimed to bolster their attacking options.

However, recent developments have revealed that Johnson was offered to another Premier League club before the Lilywhites, namely Manchester United.

Other clubs were interested in signing the right-winger, as reports linking Johnson with a move away from Forest had been circulating since the start of last summer’s transfer window.

According to The Athletic, Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid made a £42.9 million bid for the winger, which Forest turned down, holding out for £55.8 million for their prized asset.

Following the unsuccessful negotiation with Atletico, Nottingham Forest’s chief football officer, Ross Wilson, offered Johnson to several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United.

However, Manchester United did not show significant interest in pursuing the wide forward at the time, leading to Tottenham eventually securing his services on the deadline day.

Johnson’s time at Tottenham so far

Initially, Johnson faced challenges in adapting to his new surroundings at North London but found his rhythm during the winter phase of the season when he received consistent playing time due to absences and injuries.

In recent weeks, the 22-year-old has begun to make significant contributions to Ange Postecoglou’s side, tallying three goals and four assists in his last 11 league appearances.

While Johnson has yet to fully showcase his potential, Spurs remain hopeful that the substantial investment made in his signature will ultimately pay dividends as he continues to develop and settle into the team.
