Tottenham are set to up their ante to sign Eberechi Eze amid new contract discussions with Crystal Palace
Tottenham Hotspur are set for a summer of change with several players expected to join and leave the club.
Spurs officially released a list of players who will leave the club upon the expiry of their contracts, whilst they also confirmed the capture of defender Kevin Danso on a permanent deal from RC Lens. However, fans will be more interested in the incomings, especially after Ange Postecoglou and Co. won the Europa League and qualified for next term’s Champions League.
This means the Lilywhites will once again compete on multiple fronts next term. So, a bigger and better squad has to be at the coach’s disposal to compete in every competition Spurs participate in. The club bosses must focus on bringing in a creative player who could share the creative burden with James Maddison.
Maddison has been Spurs’ creator-in-chief in the last two campaigns, producing the goods consistently in the final third. But if he isn’t available or not having a best day in the office, Ange Postecoglou’s side have struggled to create chances and unlock rigid defences. Thus, it is not surprising that the club are looking for a creative player to address this problem.
Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze has been of interest to Tottenham for a while now. The England international was the star in the Eagles’ FA Cup success, scoring the winner against favourites Manchester City in the final. He has been the club’s best player in recent years and the playmaker’s performances have not gone unnoticed across the English circuit.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are prepared to trigger Eberechi Eze’s £68m release clause, or propose a player-plus-cash deal. Crystal Palace are wary of their London rivals’ interest and are pushing to agree a new contract with their star midfielder.
The England international’s current deal at Selhurst Park, which runs until June 2027, includes a £68m release clause. Tottenham are ready to pay the release clause before it runs out in mid-August in a bid to land Eberechi Eze before it is too late. Palace want to extend the 26-year-old’s stay and have initiated contract talks with his representatives. This shows chairman Steve Parish’s firmness to keep hold of the club’s most valuable asset after the FA Cup success.
The aforementioned report adds Eze remains content with life in South London and is reluctant to force a move. However, with Spurs having qualified for the Champions League after three years, the versatile midfielder is willing to test himself at the highest level as he looks to nail down his spot in the England team for the 2026 World Cup.
This gives Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy a ray of hope to land Eze, whose 2024/25 season was the finest individual campaign of his career to date. The Greenwich-born talent has served the Eagles very well, but set to turn 27 in June and enter the peak stages of his career, it wouldn’t be wrong if he decides to move to a bigger club and compete in the best European competition.
A move to White Hart Lane would offer Eze the opportunity to rub shoulders with the best players in the Champions League and take his game to the next level. Consistent performances in the league and Europe in a Tottenham shirt would give him more of a chance to establish himself as a regular in Tuchel’s England squad.
