Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale is one of the most decorated pitchers of his generation, with an ERA title, Cy Young Award, pitching Triple Crown, eight All-Star appearances and a 2018 World Series ring. He recently added another distinction to his resume by becoming the fastest pitcher in MLB history to reach the 2,500-strikeout milestone, breaking Randy Johnson's 1999 record by 81 2/3 innings.
"I appreciate it for what it is, but I try not to get too caught up in stuff like that right now. I know what our job is here," Sale said of the accomplishment.
Sale had a rough end to his time in Boston due to injury and ineffectiveness, but responded by winning his first Cy Young Award and claiming the pitching Triple Crown in his first year with the Atlanta Braves in 2024. Unfortunately for both him and Atlanta, he was scratched from his final start of the regular season and shut down for the postseason after helping clinch one of the final National League wild-card spots.
Which brings us to today's quiz. Despite the Braves' disastrous start to the 2025 season, Sale has been effective once again, boasting a 3.06 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 12 starts. With that being said, how many of the 36 MLB pitchers with 2,500 or more strikeouts in the Live-Ball Era (since 1920) can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
