No. 1 ranked Ashleigh Barty retires from tennis at age 25
Three-time Grand Slam winner and No. 1 ranked Ashleigh Barty shocked the tennis world Tuesday night when she announced her retirement at age 25.
"I'll be retiring from tennis," Barty said in an interview she posted on her Instagram. "It's actually the first time I've said that out loud and it's hard to say, but I'm so happy and so ready. And I just know at the moment, in my heart, for me as a person, this is right.
"I don't have the physical drive, the emotional want, and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level any more. I am spent."`
Barty turned professional at age 15, but broke out as a force to be reckoned with in 2019 when she reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and won the French Open. Two years later, she won Wimbledon.
In January, Barty beat every opponent in the Australian Open in straight sets, including Danielle Collins in the final, 6-3, 7-6.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, Barty is only the fourth player in WTA history to have their final Grand Slam match be a win in the final.
