Serena Williams plans to retire after U.S. Open

It was reported three weeks ago that women's tennis legend Serena Williams would be making her return to the U.S. Open for the first time since her semifinal run in 2020. On Tuesday, fans of the 40-year-old icon learned that the Grand Slam event will be the final one of her playing career.

Williams made her long-anticipated return from injury in June at Wimbledon but fell in the opening round of singles play against Harmony Tan. Williams is currently competing in the National Bank Open in Toronto, and she will also play at the Western & Southern Open Aug. 14 in Cincinnati.

The U.S. Open begins on Aug. 24. Williams will be vying for her 24th Grand Slam title, but she hasn't captured a singles crown since the 2017 Australian Open.

Williams has won six U.S. Open singles titles, with her last first-place finish coming in 2014.
