Before Williams starts her attempt at an eighth Wimbledon title — which would move her into a tie for second place all time — she will play at a lower-level grass-court event in Eastbourne, Great Britain next week, entering doubles with Tunisian Ons Jabeur. The 40-year-old's last match came at the 2021 Wimbledon tournament, when she suffered a right leg injury during the first set of her first-round match.
Opening round play at the 2022 Wimbledon tournament will begin on June 27.
A 23-time Grand Slam winner — most in the Open-Era — Williams posted a photo of her white shoes on what seems to be a grass court and the message: “SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022. See you there. Let’s Go.” “SW” are her initials and “SW19” is the postal code for Wimbledon.
Williams last captured a singles crown at Wimbledon in 2016. She was the runner-up in 2018 and 2019.
