Big 12 cancels virtual media day

Ten days after the Pac-12 postponed football media days "until further notice" due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Big 12 announced it's canceling its virtual media day scheduled for Aug. 3.

In an official statement, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said:

"There continues to be a lot more questions than answers about what the football season will look like. A media day is intended to talk football and the prospects for the season. Part of that discussion is who you will be playing and when. With the on-going consideration of scheduling models by our Board of Directors, this is the best course of action at this time."

The statement adds that Bowlsby will address the state of the conference's fall sports calendars in a yet-to-be-scheduled media briefing.

On Wednesday, the ACC announced its "10 plus one" 11-game model that includes the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for the 2020 football season. Earlier Thursday, the SEC moved to a conference-only, 10-game calendar and pushed the start of its season to Sept. 26.

Both the Big Ten and Pac-12 could reveal football schedules before the end of the week. They've already moved to conference-only slates.

The NCAA isn't expected to announce any rulings on the football season before next week at the earliest.
