Will Power fastest in first practice session for 2025 Indianapolis 500

Two-time IndyCar champion and 2018 Indianapolis 500 winner Will Power was fastest in the first practice session for the 2025 Indianapolis 500 on Tuesday. 

In a session delayed by rain and prematurely ended by lightning, Power's No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet laid down a fastest lap of 39.64 seconds around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 

Two-time defending Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden was second-fastest, with two-time defending IndyCar champion Alex Palou, six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon and Scott McLaughlin rounding out the top five. Four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves was sixth on the speed chart, with Alexander Rossi, Marcus Armstrong, Marcus Ericsson and Marco Andretti completing the top 10. 

Other notable practice results include 2012 Indy 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay in 14th, Colton Herta in 16th, Kyle Kirkwood in 19th, 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson in 24th and two-time Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato in 31st. 

26-year-old Callum Ilott brought up the rear in the session, finishing 34th out of 34 cars. 

The 34 cars that participated in the session ran a total of 1,549 laps. Kyffin Simpson (22nd-fastest) ran the most laps of any driver with 84, while Robert Shwartzman (33rd-fastest) ran the fewest laps of any driver with six. 

Wednesday's six-hour practice session is scheduled to run from noon ET to 6 p.m. ET. Coverage will be provided by FS2 from noon to 4 p.m. ET and will switch to FS1 from 4 p.m. ET to 6 p.m. ET.
