Pirates medical staff had to perform CPR on spring training guest

There was a scary moment at Pittsburgh Pirates spring training on Tuesday when the team's medical staff had to perform CPR in the outfield during a workout. 

It was unknown at first who was on the receiving end of the medical attention, but a Pirates spokesperson told the local media that it was a guest of the team that had been invited to shag fly balls during the team's batting practice. 

According to the Post-Gazette's Jason Mackey, the guest is a member of the Manatee county chamber of commerce and was alert and responsive when they were taken to the hospital after suffering a cardiac event. Pirates team doctor Patrick Demeo administered CPR. Mackey also reported that a defibrillator was also used on the older gentleman. 

The initial reports coming out of Bradenton did not specify if it was a Pirates player, coach or somebody else that required the attention, but it was still a scary moment after what unfolded with Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin during an NFL game in early January. 

The incident created a new public awareness for learning CPR, with the NFL even offering free CPR training during Super Bowl week in Arizona. 

Fortunately, the Pirates medical staff was nearby and able to assist during Tuesday's incident.
