Yankees re-sign GM Brian Cashman to four-year contract

The New York Yankees confirmed expected news on Monday.

As noted by Bryan Hoch of the Yankees' website, the club announced that senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman has put pen to paper on a four-year contract that runs through the 2026 season. It was reported last month that Cashman would "100 percent" sign a new deal with the organization after his previous contract had expired.

Cashman had been working without a deal this offseason before Monday's development. Both he and manager Aaron Boone are set to run it back with the Yankees after they were swept in the American League Championship Series by the Houston Astros in October.

Cashman, 55, is the longest-serving general manager in the history of the Yankees and has held the job since 1998. Under his leadership, New York has won World Series titles on four occasions but last did so in 2009 and hasn't since returned to the Fall Classic. Sports radio legend Mike Francesa was among those who believed the Yankees needed "wholesale changes" following an ALCS the club likely would prefer to forget.

Cashman re-signed slugger Anthony Rizzo in November but seemingly has taken a back seat to team owner Hal Steinbrenner as it pertains to negotiations with reigning AL Most Valuable Player Aaron Judge. Judge rejected the club's seven-year, $213.5 million contract extension offer before Opening Day and reportedly is between re-signing with the Yankees and joining the San Francisco Giants.

"The strong organization preference is to retain Judge, but some experienced agents expect Cashman will embrace the challenge of building the team without its core superstar," ESPN's Buster Olney said for a piece published ahead of the weekend.
