Mike Francesa: Yankees 'need wholesale changes,' 'a new voice' after ALCS sweep

Unsurprisingly, sports radio legend Mike Francesa delivered some parting shots at the New York Yankees after they suffered a four-game sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series that wrapped up late Sunday night.

"The Yankees have become masters of the excuse," Francesa said during the latest edition of his BetRivers podcast, per James Kratch of Elite Sports NY. "Nobody cares. Nobody cares. Get the result. That’s it. They need changes. They need wholesale changes."

Francesa generated headlines when he tweeted that the Yankees sounded "like losers" after starting pitcher Luis Severino said that Houston's Alex Bregman "got lucky" when he hit a home run in Game 2 of the ALCS. The former WFAN host suggested early Monday morning that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone could both pay for the sweep with their jobs.

"I don’t think the Yankees are going in the right direction," Francesa explained. "They need a new voice. … This team isn’t missing something. It’s missing a whole lot."

Cashman insisted last week that Boone was safe heading into the AL Division Series-deciding Game 5 against the Cleveland Guardians that the Yankees won 5-1. However, Joel Sherman of the New York Post notes that Cashman's contract expires after the World Series that won't include the Bronx Bombers.

"I think they need a different tact. … It’s not about making the playoffs," Francesa continued about the Yankees. "They haven’t been to a World Series since 2009. And now there is a team they can’t get past. No matter what they do, they cannot get past them. And if anything, the gap has widened."

The Post's Jenna Lemoncelli pointed out that the Astros eliminated the Yankees from postseason tournaments this fall and in 2019, 2017 and 2015.

Meanwhile, Yankees All-Star slugger and uncrowned AL Most Valuable Player Aaron Judge is set to hit free agency after he rejected New York's seven-year, $213.5 million extension offer before Opening Day. It's unclear how much the Yankees are willing to spend to hold onto Judge through his 30s.
