Report: Brian Cashman '100 percent' will remain Yankees general manager

It appears Brian Cashman is a free agent in name only.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that a source told him it is "100 percent" that the New York Yankees will sign Cashman to a new deal as their general manager. There had been conflicting stories regarding when Cashman's most recent contract expired, but he confirmed while speaking with reporters during Friday's Yankees-related media event he hasn't had an official agreement since Oct. 31.

"I’ve been working with this franchise for a long time. My contract is expired but I am one of many people who have done that," Cashman explained, per The Post's Justin Terranova. "It doesn’t guarantee anything, I am not here to assume anything."

Cashman added that Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner "has expressed interest in having me back" and that he hasn't spoken to any other teams and isn't even sure if he can per tampering rules.

As R.J. Anderson noted for CBS Sports, Cashman has served as Yankees general manager since 1998 and previously worked without a contract for more than a month in the fall of 2017 before the two sides put pen to paper on a five-year agreement.

Since the 1998 campaign, the Yankees have won four World Series titles. However, the Bronx Bombers haven't appeared in a Fall Classic since 2009, and that reality had noteworthy individuals such as sports radio legend Mike Francesa calling for the storied franchise to make "wholesale changes" this offseason.

Instead, Steinbrenner made it known after the Yankees were swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series that Aaron Boone would return as manager for at least the start of the 2023 season. It was subsequently reported Boone and Cashman weren't necessarily a package deal for the organization, but it now seems the two will remain associated with the Yankees for the foreseeable future.
