Could Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge be package deal for Yankees?

Tuesday may have offered fans the first step toward the New York Yankees ultimately re-signing All-Star Aaron Judge.

Per ESPN's Jesse Rogers and others, slugger Anthony Rizzo will be re-signing with the Yankees via a two-year deal that includes a club option for 2025. Rizzo opted out of his contract last week and had been linked with would-be suitors such as the San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros.

In late October, Yankees beat writer Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media appeared on San Francisco sports radio station KNBR (h/t Jake Montero) and explained how the Giants could land both Rizzo and Judge in free agency.

"If [the Giants] get [Rizzo], that will convince Judge he can win," Miller remarked at that time. "To me, the biggest holdup here, can the Giants convince Judge they’re in it to win it every year? They are spoiled in New York. They haven’t won one, that hurts him, but they’ve made the playoffs every year since his rookie year. They’re further now away from the (Houston Astros) than they’ve ever been."

As for Judge, he rejected New York's seven-year, $213.5 million contract extension offer before Opening Day and is set to cash in on what could be a historic deal.

"Whatever he’s gonna get will be astronomical and he deserves it," Rizzo said of Judge after the Yankees were swept by the Astros in the American League Championship Series. "I hope it’s in a Yankee uniform for him and for the game [and] for baseball in general."

Rogers reports Rizzo will earn $34 million over the next two seasons and that the club option is worth $17 million. The story also noted that "Rizzo quickly became a favored teammate for many current Yankees including Aaron Judge."

Meanwhile, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner has admitted he's open to naming Judge the club's first official captain since Derek Jeter retired following the 2014 season if the Linden, California native commits his long-term future to the Bronx Bombers.
