Beat writer offers timeline for possible return of Giants' Daniel Jones

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones missed this past Sunday's 14-9 loss at the Buffalo Bills because of a neck injury that could keep him out for more than just this Sunday's home game against the 3-3 Washington Commanders.

Giants beat writer Paul Schwartz of the New York Post noted for a piece published Wednesday that his "best guess" is that Jones won't play "this week and perhaps not the next week, either." Also on Wednesday, Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed that Jones is cleared to throw but is not yet medically cleared for contact.

While Jones missed the final six games of the 2021 season because of a neck injury, he insisted last week his current issue is different than what bothered him less than 24 months ago.

"All that means is there is another area in Jones' neck that is now cause for concern," Schwartz wrote. "Any sort of discomfort or tingling is a sign that something is not right, and as long as that is the case, the Giants will not risk putting Jones at risk. This could take a while."

Jones admitted during a Tuesday appearance on the FanDuelTV "Up and Adams" program that he is "still dealing with some" symptoms related to his injury. That information coupled with Schwartz's update suggests the 26-year-old will watch backup Tyrod Taylor play for the 1-5 Giants against Washington.

"Until those symptoms are completely gone...it is highly unlikely the Giants will allow their quarterback to get back onto the field," Schwartz added about Jones.

Taylor completed 24-of-36 pass attempts for 200 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the defeat against Buffalo and presumably will remain atop the depth chart until Jones is cleared. Following this coming weekend, the Giants next "host" the 3-3 New York Jets on Oct. 29.

The Jets are spending Week 7 on their bye.
