Giants' Daniel Jones shares concerning update on neck injury

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones sounds no closer to returning from the neck injury that prevented him from playing against the Buffalo Bills this past Sunday night than he was ahead of the weekend.

"Still dealing with some of those symptoms from it," Jones said about the issue during a Tuesday appearance on the FanDuelTV "Up and Adams" program, per Jared Schwartz of the New York Post. "I’m not gonna get specifically into what exactly they are. But I’m trying hard to get back, still dealing with it a little bit, but trying to do everything I can to heal up and prove to the doctors and trainers that I’m ready to go."

Jones missed the final six games of the 2021 season because of a neck injury that left him needing an offseason procedure but insisted last week that his latest setback is "different than what I’ve dealt with in the past." However, the fact that the Giants worked out veteran signal-callers Matt Barkley and Ian Book on Monday raised eyebrows and hinted the 26-year-old may not be good to go when 1-5 New York hosts the 3-3 Washington Commanders this coming Sunday.

Backup Tyrod Taylor ended the first half of the Bills game with a woeful mistake but otherwise performed admirably in Jones' place. Taylor completed 24-of-36 pass attempts for 200 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions versus Buffalo and likely would start against Washington if Jones isn't cleared for contact.

"It’s tough not playing," Jones acknowledged on Tuesday. "You want to be out there, with the team, with the guys, and help win. I thought we played well, played hard, just came up a little short there at the end. It was a tough way to finish. I thought we played well. I thought Tyrod certainly played well, too."

According to ESPN stats, Jones heads into Week 7 ranked 31st in the NFL among qualified players with an average of 5.9 yards per pass attempt and tied for 27th with a 39.8 adjusted QBR on the season. Before he was sidelined during the Week 5 loss at the Miami Dolphins, he tallied two touchdown passes and six interceptions across five games.
