Cowboys' Jerry Jones has promising update on QB Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones sounds optimistic that quarterback Dak Prescott could soon be back in the lineup.

"I don’t want to say, but he has made a lot of progress," Jones remarked about Prescott during a Friday appearance on Dallas sports radio station 105.3 The Fan, as shared by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "Throwing the ball with zip and [that’s] very, very important. How he is healing is just great. So all systems on go there."

Prescott hasn't played since he went down with a serious thumb injury in Week 1. Earlier this week, Jones noted that the two-time Pro Bowl selection needed "to really spin the ball" during practice to be cleared for in-game action.

Backup Cooper Rush is starting in place of the injured Prescott and has guided the 4-1 Cowboys to four consecutive victories ahead of the upcoming "Sunday Night Football" matchup at the unbeaten division-rival Philadelphia Eagles (5-0). Prescott admitted earlier this week he's "antsy" to return atop the depth chart, but it's thought Dallas could consider sitting the 29-year-old until its bye in Week 9 depending on the outcome of Sunday's contest and the Week 7 home game versus the Detroit Lions.

The Cowboys host the Chicago Bears in Week 8 on Oct. 30.

According to ESPN stats, Rush enters the weekend 12th among eligible quarterbacks with a 93.9 passer rating and fifth with a 67.6 total QBR, but he's also 24th with a 61.0% completion percentage. The 28-year-old has thrown four touchdown throws and zero interceptions.
