Troy Aikman: Cooper Rush's success creates 'real question' at QB Cowboys must answer

Since taking over for an injured Dak Prescott in Week 1, Cooper Rush has led the Cowboys to a 4-0 record as the team's starting quarterback.

After Rush took over the reins in place of Prescott, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he'd "welcome" a quarterback controversy.

Well, Jones has seemingly gotten his wish.

With Prescott "antsy" to make his return to the field after undergoing surgery to repair a fracture in his right thumb, speculation has begun as to whether the Cowboys will continue to ride the hot hand or turn back to Prescott once healthy.

Hall of Famer and Cowboys legend Troy Aikman agrees that Rush's play will force the team to answer some tough questions, especially if they come away with a victory this Sunday against the NFL's lone undefeated team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

"If the (Cowboys win Sunday), you start asking the question, 'Do we put Dak back in?'" Aikman said Thursday on 96.7 The Ticket (h/t The Athletic's Jon Machota). "Considering what they've been able to do and how they've been able to win games with Cooper Rush, I think that becomes a real question the organization has to answer."

Aikman didn't question Prescott's spot as the franchise quarterback, nor deny that the Cowboys are better with him under center. But he did point out the realities of the position.

"It's the only position it probably happens at because if you're 4-0, 5-0 and your linebacker's out, well, when he's ready to play, he comes back in and plays, but at quarterback, there's a lot obviously with that position," Aikman said. "There's a reason they change quarterbacks when teams are struggling, regardless of how the quarterback may be playing.

"If they're winning and they win a big road game against Philadelphia, I could see where there is some pause, and you say, 'Well, how exactly do we handle this?'"
