Daniel Jones shares big update on Giants future

Injured quarterback Daniel Jones insisted on Wednesday he still sees himself as the New York Giants' long-term starter amid understandable questions regarding his future.

"Yeah, I do," Jones told reporters regarding the subject, per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. "I’m focused on rehabbing and getting back on the field."

Jones suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5 and underwent successful surgery to repair the issue on Nov. 22. Before that setback, he missed three games this season because of a neck injury after a similar issue cost him the final six contests of the 2021 campaign.

The day before his surgery, Jones revealed he could face "about an eight to nine to 10-month recovery period." Such a timeline could put his status for Week 1 next September in doubt, but Jones indicated on Wednesday he wants to be good to go for preseason games in August.

"It’s definitely the goal to be back by training camp," Jones explained. "I’m focused on what I’m doing right now and what’s directly in front of me, but long-term it’s definitely the goal to be back by training camp."

While the Giants likely can't escape the four-year contract Jones signed this past March before next season ends, at the earliest, his deal wouldn't necessarily prevent general manager Joe Schoen from using a high draft pick on a future replacement such as USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams or Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Following Week 13, the 4-8 Giants were seventh in the draft order for 2024.

It was reported last week that Schoen may wait until 2025 to make a "big-swing quarterback addition in the draft."

For now, Giants head coach Brian Daboll is sticking with undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito over veteran backup Tyrod Taylor as New York's QB1 after DeVito helped Big Blue notch two straight wins ahead of the club's bye. As of Wednesday afternoon, oddschecker listed the DeVito-led Giants as 6.5-point underdogs for the upcoming "Monday Night Football" home game against the 6-6 Green Bay Packers.
