Eagles to release veteran wideout Alshon Jeffery

The Philadelphia Eagles will be parting ways with another veteran wide receiver.

Three days after Philadelphia released DeSean Jackson, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Eagles will cut Alshon Jeffery when the new league year opens next month. As Nick Shook explained for the NFL's official website, the Eagles restructured Jeffery's contract in early January to provide salary-cap relief and also force the club into making a decision on his playing future ahead of the original schedule.

Jeffery played for the Chicago Bears from 2012 through 2016 and then signed with the Eagles in March 2017. He was a significant part of the squad that defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, but he's missed time in each of the past three seasons because of injuries.

In just seven games during the 2020 season, Jeffery caught six passes for 115 yards with a touchdown.

Philadelphia seems content on settling all family business before free agency begins. Nick Sirianni was hired as new head coach, and the club has agreed to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts.

It's believed Jalen Hurts will have to compete for the Philadelphia starting job during summer training camp sessions and the preseason.
