Report: Saints optimistic All-Pro WR Michael Thomas will be cleared during training camp

The start of training camp marks the beginning of a new era for the New Orleans Saints as they turn the page on the Sean Payton years and look toward the future with their new head coach, Dennis Allen.

Heading into his first training camp as coach, Allen may receive a much-needed boost with the return of all-pro wideout Michael Thomas, who hasn't played since 2020.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Saints are optimistic that Thomas could be cleared to return to the field "some time" during training camp.

The most recent positive report on Thomas aligns with the offseason news on the three-time pro bowler's rehab. In May, Allen said Thomas was progressing well in rehab, and the plan was for him to be ready for training camp.

After staying relatively healthy for most of his career, ankle injuries began to plague Thomas in 2020. That season he was limited to seven games and he then missed all of 2021 dealing with the same ankle issues.

In 2020, Thomas' numbers were understandably low, compiling 40 catches for 438 yards and no touchdowns.

Thomas' last full season, 2019, saw him make his third Pro Bowl while earning his second All-Pro nod. He finished with career highs in catches (149) and receiving yards (1,725) to go along with nine touchdowns.

In five seasons with the Saints, Thomas has hauled in 510 receptions for 5,950 yards and 32 touchdowns.
