Matteo Darmian and Denzel Dumfries are both vying for a start on the right for Inter Milan against Atletico Madrid.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper anticipate that this is the one area of the pitch in which there is any doubt.
There is certainly no doubt that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will aim to start his strongest team in Wednesday’s Champions League round of sixteen second leg away in Madrid.
The Nerazzurri have a 1-0 advantage to hold onto from the first leg. But they will know full well that playing away in the Spanish capital is a different proposition.
Inzaghi has rotated his team significantly in the last few league fixtures.
For example, there were six different outfield players out of ten in Saturday’s win over Bologna compared to the previous match against Genoa.
But in Europe, Inzaghi will go all-out with his strongest possible starting eleven.
Inter will feel that a spot in the quarterfinals is in their grasp. But the team must be at their absolute best.
Darmian Or Dumfries The Only Selection Doubt For Inter Vs Atletico Madrid
The back three of Alessandro Bastoni, Francesco Acerbi, and Benjamin Pavard will line up from the start against Atletico. That is the first-choice trio.
And it is a similar situation in midfield. The regular starters Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Nicolo Barella will start.
In attack, captain Latuaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram will lead the line.
And in goal former Bayern Munich keeper Yann Sommer will keep his usual spot.
On the left, Federico Dimarco will start – Carlos Augusto is out with an injury. But on the other flank, there is some doubt.
Former Manchester United and Torino veteran Darmian had started the first leg.
But Dumfries is also very much vying for a spot in the lineup.
One potential factor is the fact that Darmian played all ninety minutes against Bologna over the weekend, playing on both the right and left flanks.
Meanwhile, Dumfries played only the second half of the match. That could mean that the Dutchman is fresher.
