Melissa McCarthy says her parents would sometimes rather hang out with Octavia Spencer
Melissa McCarthy has been in Byron Bay, Australia, for the last nine months, and her parents have been filling the void by spending time with Octavia Spencer.
McCarthy and Spencer, the best of friends for over 20 years, are co-stars in the upcoming Netflix action comedy Thunder Force, and they Zoomed in to Jimmy Kimmel Live for Thursday night's episode. The segment began with the shenanigans they have gotten into as neighbors over the years before Kimmel asked Spencer if she's been to McCarthy's empty house while she's in Australia.
"When Melissa's not in town, I get to spend some time with her parents," Spencer said.
McCarthy chimed in: "Yeah, they're there a big part of the year, which I love. It is sometimes awkward, though, because there's times where, if I'm not working that day, I'll call my dad, and he's like, 'Oh! We just had the most wonderful breakfast with Octavia.' I'm like, 'I'm four houses away. Did you think about calling me?' And he's like, 'I did not.'"
The powerhouse duo then discussed a prank McCarthy pulled on Spencer during the filming of Thunder Force. They had decided that as superheroes, they needed a "super cool car," McCarthy explained. The car of choice was a purple Lamborghini, and the scene was the two of them leaping into it and peeling out. They quickly realized "it's, like, three and a half inches off the ground." McCarthy saw an opportunity: she lowered Spencer's side down to "a quarter of an inch" from the ground, and Spencer couldn't get out of the car. Kimmel (obviously jokingly) suggested Spencer get revenge by seducing McCarthy's father.
Thunder Force, due to hit Netflix on April 9, is led by McCarthy (two-time Oscar nominee) and Spencer (Oscar winner) as estranged best friends who reunite after one of them develops a formula that transforms them into superheroes. The cast also includes Jason Bateman, Bobby Cannavale and Melissa Leo.
Ben Falcone, McCarthy's husband, directed and wrote the project. The couple previously collaborated on The Boss, Life of the Party, Superintelligence, and more.
