Charlie Cox and company are working on the second season of "Daredevil: Born Again." He and some of his compatriots from the Netflix show returned for Disney's continuation of that world, but it hasn't been an easy trip to get to this point. Matt Murdock may be the man without fear, but Cox is apparently not afraid to speak critically of his own show. In fact there is one episode from the first season that Cox was forthright enough to say, "I didn't like it."
The episode in question is "With Interest," the fifth episode of the season. It's the one where Murdock situates himself into a bank robbery after going there to try and get a business loan. Watching it, the episode does feel sort of like a placeholder, though not without some charms for us. Cox, though, feels differently about "With Interest," going as far as to say in an interview, "It was my least favorite of the episodes, and I kind of pushed back against it as much as I felt was possible." He also calls bank robbery stories of this ilk a "1970s game," which is to say they are archaic as a storytelling trope.
Now, you might be thinking, "Wow, Cox is kind of taking the show he is working on to task!" There are certainly many actors and creatives out there who only speak positively about their projects. However, in terms of Cox being critical of "Born Again," it's a "yes...and no" situation.
As mentioned, the road to "Daredevil: Born Again" wasn't an easy trip. Originally when Disney got the Daredevil rights, they were going to make a show that felt more like the other Disney+ offerings and not the Netflix show. Episodes were being written and ideas were being crafted, but two people were not fans of the vision and direction of this show: Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio. That wasn't ideal, given they were to be the two stars.
They even started shooting, but then the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes stopped things down, and "Daredevil: Born Again" changed. A new showrunner, Dario Scardapane, was hired. He had worked on Netflix's "The Punisher." The new staff wanted to adhere to the Netflix tone, so a few new episodes were written, a new pilot was made, and episodes that were already shot were tweaked and had new scenes shot in them.
Well, there is one episode that Cox says didn't change at all. One that was from the original shoot. That would be "With Interest." This provides Cox with the freedom to talk negatively about it. It's essentially from a different show, one not made by his current showrunner and the current creative team. In a way, talking trash about "With Interest" is promoting the second season of "Born Again" and complimenting Scardapane.
Of course, Cox does still note that some people love the episode and he's cool with that. He is, after all, still a celebrity who needs engagement with his work from the general audience.
