The next "Godzilla x Kong" has an official title and a release date

We are full-throated fans of the Godzilla and Kong era of the so-called "Monsterverse." The first few movies took themselves too seriously, but then Adam Wingard took over as the director starting with "Godzilla vs. Kong" and the next thing we knew Rebecca Hall was saying, "Kong bows to no one" and we were off and running. Wingard's two films have been the exact kind of fun, dumb action movie we enjoy. Slick, silly, delightful stuff. As such, we greet the announcement of the title and release date of the next film with enthusiasm.

Maybe we will have to wait until March of 2027, but the subtitle "Supernova" does not disappoint. Neither does the cast. While much of the human characters from the previous movies aren't back, Dan Stevens returns as the gonzo monster doctor Trapper. Delroy Lindo and Jack O'Connell, who were both recently seen crushing it in "Sinners," are in the cast. So is Kaitlyn Dever, Matthew Modine, and freakin' Sam Neill. We can only hope Neill is playing the thinnest-veiled riff on Alan Grant from "Jurassic Park."

The only dent in the hype for us is that Wingard has moved on from the Monsterverse. He's returned to his original calling card, clever, vibes-based horror-thriller films, with the upcoming "Onslaught" and he brought Hall and Stevens along for the ride with that. Stevens is officially a Wingard regular now, going back to perhaps the most vibes-based of all thrillers not directed by John Carpenter, "The Guest."

Wingard's replacement is Australian director Grant Sputore, whose only substantive work to date is 2019's "I Am Mother." Still, hope remains. Sputore has the opportunity to continue the tone of the franchise in "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova." A franchise wherein the Earth is hollow and full of monsters and Kong is essentially a Jim Rockford-esque put-upon hero.
