The Pokemon Company

The time has come to launch an urban development plan for Lumiose City because The Pokémon Company just announced that a new Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A. During its Pokémon Presents session in celebration of Pokémon Day 2024, the company finally revealed its next Pokémon Legends entry. Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which some hypothesize to mean Pokémon Legends Zygrade, at least in part, is a new Pokémon game releasing in 2025. In a surprising twist, the game will take place in Pokémon‘s Kalos region.

You can watch the full trailer for Pokémon Legends Z-A below.

For a long time, Pokémon fans have speculated where the next Pokémon Legends game might take them. Many thought a new game would take them to Gen 2’s Johto or Gen 5’s Unova regions, especially since Johto has a 25th anniversary this year, and Unova seemed the next logical step in the progression of Pokémon remakes. Additionally, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet‘s recently released DLC, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, seemed to point to those games as well. The Indigo Disk, the second part of the DLC, even took place in the Unova Region. But it seems like the new game will head to Pokémon‘s Kalos region. Or, at the very least, we’ll find Pokémon Z-A‘s main city, Lumiose City, there.

For those unfamiliar, Pokémon‘s Kalos region hails from its Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games. It is known as Gen 6. The Kalos region is the setting of these games, and it is shaped like a five-pointed star. Kalos’ main setting is Lumiose City which we see in the Pokémon Z-A trailer, but it additionally features mountains and a huge ocean. Among other Pokémon, Kalos features starters Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. Its legendaries include Xerneas, Yveltal, and, of course, Zygarde. Pokémon Legends Z-A, you know? We’re starting to feel excited for this new Pokémon game already.

We don’t know too much about the game yet, but we’d guess we’ll see another mix of ancient and future storytelling. It looks like this game might draw on both the future, using ideas for the planned Pokémon Z game that was never made, and the past, in a more Pokémon: Legends Arceus sort of way. Pokémon Z-A‘s trailer also hints at the idea of mega-evolutions. Pokémon originally introduced in Pokémon X and Y. And so, we wonder if the game could expand on the idea of mega evolutions and the second timeline they create in its lore.

For now, the new Pokémon game’s trailer description simply reads, “A new adventure awaits within Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan is underway to shape the city into a place that belongs to both people and Pokémon.” A Twitter post from Nintendo further reveals that this new adventure takes place “entirely within Lumiose City.” Very interesting.

An official Instagram post further shares that “Pokémon Z-A, an ambitious new entry to the Pokémon video game series, will launch on Nintendo Switch systems in 2025!” A release additionally notes that Pokémon Z-A will be released on the “Nintendo Switch family of systems in 2025.” We wonder what consoles that refers to.
