FOX primetime is now all animation and riffs on old reality competition shows

The other day, FOX announced that it was renewing a few of its animated shows, adding to the renewal of three other animated shows and bringing back "American Dad." from TBS. That flew in the face of CBS and NBC canceling shows left and right. Well, that is not to paint FOX as the bastion for scripted programming. It has announced its upcoming schedule, and in the mix there are a few more reality shows of the game/competition reality added to a few that already existed.

As you can see, that summer lineup is all "unscripted" and animation, but the fall is more of the same by and large. Tuesday nights will feature two hour-long dramas, but that's it. Added into the mix, along with extant competition shows is, we kid you not, "Celebrity Weakest Link." During the holiday season, a spinoff of "Next Level Chef" called "Next Level Baker" will air. Oh, that's not all. At midseason, along with "The Masked Singer," FOX is bringing back "Fear Factor."

None of that is appealing. It's not even creative. Bringing back "The Weakest Link" and adding celebrities (which appeared sometimes on the original version as is) while also bringing back one of the dumbest's shows ever concocted, "Fear Factor," is quite unpalatable, and certainly craven. FOX's schedule is now all about animation and the kind of competition shows that can be made relatively on the cheap. When you decide to bring back "Fear Factor," a show that didn't even originate on your network, you've really ceded the high ground going forward.

Well, at least "American Dad" is back on FOX? Eh, it's really just all about football and watching "The Simpsons" until its run finally ends at this point.
