CBS has been canceling shows left and right, including "The Equalizer" starring Queen Latifah. NBC has cleared out space for NBA basketball in the fall by canceling several shows as well. FOX, though, is not getting on the cancellation train. In fact, it just renewed three animated shows: "Grimsburg," "Krapopolis," and "Universal Basic Guys."
"Universal Basic Guys" had already gotten a second-season renewal before its first season debuted, but it has now been greenlit for a third season as well. "Grimsburg," in its second season, has been picked up for its third season. Meanwhile, "Krapopolis," which has the cache of being a Dan Harmon show, has now been picked up for five seasons even though it is still airing its second season.
FOX has really delivered Oprah-esque "Everybody gets a car!" vibes with its animated shows. Earlier this year it renewed "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," "Bob's Burgers" and "American Dad" for four seasons. Also, its bringing "American Dad" back after a decade of it airing on FOX. As a side note, we love "The Simpsons," we think it's been quite good for the last few seasons, and we have no patience for "They should have canceled it 20 years ago" complaints, but a four-season pickup is a little concerning. Harry Shearer is 81 years old. Julie Kavner is 74 and you can hear it in her voiceover work. It's morbid, but we don't want to see "The Simpsons" lose an irreplaceable cast member while it still has, like, two seasons to deliver.
Flipping from that dark note, it's been a good year for fans of FOX animation!
