David Letterman, an iconic of the talk show format and comedy in general, was known for his snarky, smartest-guy-in-the-room style, but also for embracing the absurd and the pointless for his own amusement.
In retirement, Letterman has grown a beard and softened a bit, but he still loves a good bit. Like, say, appearing on a local late-night show in Bangor, Maine. No, really.
Evidently a Mainer named Danny Cashman has been doing a local late-night show in Maine called "The Nite Show" for 15 years, but the show is coming to a close. For the penultimate episode, he made the effort to have one of his comedic influences, perhaps his greatest comedic influence, on the show as a surprise guest. There is a time when it feels like there is no way Letterman would have agreed to this unless he could make it a bit saturated in awkwardness. Instead, here in 2025, he just went to Bangor and goofed around and had a good time on "The Nite Show."
Kudos to Cashman for making the effort to see if Letterman would appear on his local Maine talk show. Kudos to Letterman for doing it. It may be 2025, and Letterman may be long retired, but he still has some of that same comedic sensibility that led to him dropping stuff off roofs just because.
