Ty Cobb's false teeth up for auction, already fetching up to $10,000

There have been some bizarre sports-related memorabilia items put up for auction in recent months.

In 2021, a tissue allegedly used by Lionel Messi during his farewell press conference with Barcelona was up for bid. Earlier this year, Antonio Brown's right glove that he threw into the stands during his wild exit from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was on the market.

Now, an item that used to belong to MLB Hall of Famer Ty Cobb — or rather inside of Cobb — is looking to fetch quite a hefty sum.

"SCP Auctions currently has Cobb's chompers — top and bottom — on the block, along with the 'original plaster denture holder and brass opening device,'" TMZ Sports reports. "After Cobb's death in 1961, the teeth were preserved. Ty's biographer, Al Stump, held the teeth for years before unloading them at Sotheby's in 1999 ... to the current consignor, who held the dentures for over 22 years."

According to the report, the dentures belonging to "The Georgia Peach" went on display in 2001 at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., where fans were able to get an up-close view of the pearly whites. The auction ends on Friday, and as of early Wednesday afternoon, there were seven bids, one of which was nearly $10,000.

This isn't the first time a former professional athlete's teeth — or mouth-related items — were up for auction. In 2021, Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert auctioned off a container that he used to hold his false teeth during games, and in 2013, it was reported that among the items up for bid in tennis great Arthur Ashe's estate were his wisdom teeth.

In the music world, one of the teeth of the late John Lennon was up for auction in 2011 and was reportedly expected to fetch $16,000 at auction.
