Disney pushes back the next two Avengers movies

Some not-so-fantastic news for the MCU. Though Disney managed to wrangle Robert Downey Jr. back to play Doctor Doom as a way to extricate itself from the Jonathan Majors mess, both of the upcoming Avengers movies have been delayed. Maybe to find some more chairs for another YouTube live stream, maybe not.

Now, the delays aren't massive, but they are interesting. "Avengers: Doomsday" has been moved from May 1, 2026 to December 18, 2026. "Avengers: Secret Wars," meanwhile, has been moved from May 7, 2027 to December 17, 2027.

So yeah, both movies are coming out the same year as originally intended, but a few months later. What's interesting, and significant, is that these moves take both films out of the summer movie season and drop them into the Christmas movie season. This doesn't indicate Marvel and/or Disney is skeptical of these movies. After all, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" got a Christmas release and it made almost $2 billion.

What is more striking if not as attention grabbing is a couple other scheduling moves Disney made vis-a-vis Marvel. There had been placeholder "Untitled Marvel" designations placed on February 13, 2026, November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027. The latter two have shifted to "Untitled Disney," and the February date is just straight-up empty now.

It would appear the paring down of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is increasing, if anything, even with two big Avengers movies on the horizon.
