Apple TV+ has dropped the first teaser trailer for Chief of War, starring, written, and executive produced by Jason Momoa. The new historical drama is told from an indigenous perspective and is considered a passion project to co-creators Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who share native Hawaiian heritage.
“Jason and I, we actually had this idea a good 10 years ago,” Sibbett told GQ. “But we knew that in order to pull off something like this, Jason needed to bring his star power up, and I needed to prove myself as a writer/creator as well. So we stayed together, we worked on all kinds of projects together, but in the end, it was all to get us to this place where we could tell this story.”
"My dream is to do this. This has been my everything. This is my Braveheart, this is my Last of the Mohicans—when I was a little kid, I looked at all these Native American movies and I love samurai movies and I love all these cultures, and so this is it for us," the actor expressed. "This is our chance. And so it's taken us a long time, but I needed to wait until my career was in the right moment, and I needed to wait until we saved cinema with Minecraft to come back and just f---- kill it, bro! You know? And to make the Hawaiian story. It's been like 25 years in the making to be able to pull off something like this, and it’s just really exciting."
The rest of the cast includes Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes.
Additionally, Momoa directs the season finale while Justin Chon directs the first two episodes. Doug Jung serves as showrunner and executive producer along with Sibbett, Chon, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, Brian Mendoza, Anders Engstrom, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, and Tim Van Patten.
Set amidst the beautiful backdrop of the islands of Hawai‘i, the nine-episode series based on true events, follows warrior Ka’iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century.
Chief of War premieres with two episodes on Friday, August 1. New episodes will then debut weekly, every Friday through September 19.
