Scarlett Johansson reveals if she would be interested in directing a future Marvel project

Scarlett Johansson just premiered her directorial debut at the Cannes Film Festival, and hopefully, we will be seeing much more of her in the director's chair going forward.

"I do [want to keep directing]," she told the NY Times. "It felt very fulfilling. We had such an amazing shooting experience. The feeling on set was so familial and creative and positive. It was really, really joyful."

The script for Eleanor the Great was written by Tory Kamen, with June Squibb leading the cast, which includes real Holocaust survivors. "In not so many years, I think it would be less possible," she said to Deadline, noting the urgency of telling this story. "Even casting our Holocaust survivor support group and identifying who was not just willing to participate, but who could participate, really made that very clear."

She continued to share, "The Jewish identity piece of this story is something that I felt I could confidently execute because it’s in my DNA. I grew up identifying as a Jewish kid growing up in New York, I had a grandmother who was not like Eleanor in some ways, but also kind of impossible and amazing — a very strong character; a very strong Jewish woman. And I think hopefully when you see the film, the authenticity of that comes through. If that piece didn’t feel authentic to me, I probably wouldn’t have touched this film."

As for how she found the project, she explained, "I have a production company called These Pictures, and we get all kinds of submissions. I wasn’t looking for something to direct at that moment. I read it because I was fascinated to see what June Squibb was starring in because I love her, and I was so surprised by the story. It had a lot of elements of films that I love, independent films from the ’90s and early aughts. It was New York-based, very character driven. And the plot device was so surprising. It made me cry. I immediately called my producing partner and was, like, I can direct this. I know how to make it."

Johansson is widely recognized for her work as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which she joined back in 2010. The actress has mentioned that she is not planning to return on-screen because she already finished the character's journey with 2021's Black Widow and 2019's Avengers: Endgame, when Natasha made the ultimate sacrifice.

However, could she come back to direct? "I think the movies that I like that are big action movies also have the human connectivity piece," she expressed. "Even producing Black Widow and being a part of the production of that, and the development of the story, and the story between Natasha and Yelena… [there is] I think, a way of doing it, a way of maintaining the integrity of the idea of human connection, family, disappointment, all of the things that were themes in [Eleanor the Great], and doing it in a giant way in a giant universe — there’s ways of doing that… So, yeah, definitely, it could be, it would be fun."

Eleanor the Great is coming soon to theaters.
