Nicolas Cage describes his relationship with his pet crow: 'I am a goth'

In the world's least surprising news, Nicolas Cage has a pet crow named Hoogan, "who lives in a geodesic dome at Cage’s home in Las Vegas," according to a new profile on the Oscar winner by The Los Angeles Times.

"He has taken to calling me names," Cage told the publication. "It’s comical, at least, it is to me. When I leave the room, he’ll say, 'Bye,' and then go, 'Ass.' Crows are very intelligent. And I like their appearance, the Edgar Allan Poe aspect. I like the goth element. I am a goth."

That self-descriptor is relevant because Cage, 58, is set to portray Dracula in monster movie Renfield from Universal Pictures—first reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Nov. 30—opposite Nicholas Hoult as the titular character.

"The character of Renfield originated in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula as a patient in an asylum obsessed with drinking blood, deluded into thinking he will find immortality," THR relayed at the time. "He bows at the feet of Dracula, who, in the very definition of toxic work environments and co-dependent relationships, feeds him insects and rats and dangles everlasting life in front of him. It is unclear how Renfield takes on the dynamic as plot details are being kept in the coffin, but the project is described as a modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone."

Cage commented on his approach to the role with The Los Angeles Times: "The key, I think, is movement. I saw a movie called Malignant, and the director James Wan and the actress [Annabelle Wallis] created this choreography that was terrifying. So I’m hoping to do something like that where Dracula can either glide or move like Sadako in Ringu."

Also within the profile, Cage said he is "really happily married" and thinks he "got it right this time" with wife Riko Shibata, whom he married last February, even though "five [marriages] is a lot."

It was confirmed earlier this month that Cage and Shibata, 27, are expecting their first child together. It will be Cage's third child, joining his sons Kal-El, 16, and Weston, 31, from previous relationships.
