Fans are eager for the final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty, and as we get closer to its premiere, Jenny Han and the cast are giving us some big hints as to what we can expect.
The showrunner and executive producer told Entertainment Weekly that "every one of the characters is put through the ringer at some point" in the third season. "They all had very emotional scenes," she commented. "And [the actors] all brought it. I was really bowled over by their level of intensity and preparation."
The Amazon Original series is based on Han's beloved book trilogy. "My preference was three seasons, but I also wanted to allow the storytelling room in case I felt like we needed more time," she explained. However, she and co-showrunner Sarah Kucserka decided eleven episodes would be perfect: "We needed more canvas for the story, so that's how we ended up with 11 episodes. But yeah, three books, three seasons. It feels right to me."
Meanwhile, the actors promise that even if you have read the book, you won't know what's going to happen. "You have no clue," Lola Tung said with Christopher Briney adding, "You have not read the scripts!"
As for the relationships, Gavin Casalegno opened up about where Belly and Jeremiah are: "You're jumping right into that [moment with them]. There's a lot of relationships that don't make it to two years, so it's a special thing to be able to see what has worked in the relationship, what have they compromised on. I think that'll be fun for people to see."
Han expressed that she was "looking for that Nala-Simba energy," to demonstrate "That playfulness of lifelong friends who have that easy intimacy with each other, and that shorthand." She even gave the co-stars a relationship questionnaire for them to fill out in character.
The rest of the cast includes Sean Kaufman, Rain Spencer, Jackie Chung, and Rachel Blanchard. The Summer I Turned Pretty will return on Wednesday, July 16.
