Abigail Breslin recalls classic ‘Super Freak’ dance in ‘Little Miss Sunshine’: ‘I didn’t have any insecurities yet’

Abigail Breslin plays an innocent young woman falsely accused of murder in Stillwater, her newest film that will hit theaters Friday (July 30).

It's a far cry and 15 years removed from her starring Little Miss Sunshine role of seven-year-old Olive, an adorable and unlikely beauty pageant contestant who dances to Rick James's "Super Freak":

"I had a lot of fun doing that, getting to work with everybody on it," Breslin, 25, told Yahoo Entertainment. "It was just a blast. And I think I was so young I didn't have any insecurities yet or anything. That took about a day and a half, I think. I just remember having such a fun time doing it."

Breslin earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. Little Miss Sunshine was a two-time winner at the 79th Academy Awards. Alan Arkin won best supporting actor, and Michael Arndt earned best writing (original screenplay).

"It was such an incredible film to be a part of, and I don't think anyone expected it to become as successful as it was," Breslin added. "So it was obviously a film that gave me a lot of opportunities and opened a lot of doors for me, so it's crazy to think it's already been 15 years, but I have amazing memories from that whole experience."

Little Miss Sunshine did traffic in gloomy subject matter. Olive's Uncle Frank (Steve Carell) is an unwilling suicide survivor. Her grandpa, Edwin (Arkin), is a heroin addict, and he eventually dies of an overdose. Her brother, Dwayne (Paul Dano) hates everyone so much that he vows to remain silent for months. But Olive is the beacon of innocent hope and light through all of it.

In Stillwater, Breslin's character is the central source of the darkness. Directed by Tom McCarthy, the crime drama follows Oklahoman oil-rig roughneck Bill Baker (Matt Damon) as he travels to France to try and exonerate his estranged daughter, Allison (Breslin), from a murder she has been imprisoned for but didn't commit.

Stillwater earned a five-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month.
