Get used to hearing news of video games being turned into movies. "Sonic the Hedgehog" is three movies into a successful franchise, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" made over $1 billion, and "A Minecraft Movie" may top that number as well. Just the other day we got an update about the casting plans for an upcoming "Street Fighter" movie. Now, there's news that an "Elden Ring" movie is in the works.
In terms of being adapted into a movie, "Elden Ring" is a pretty-obvious choice. One, the original game has been a huge hit, commercially and critically, since being released in 2022. Two, it's a "wizards and stuff" fantasy game, not unlike "Lord of the Rings." Three, the game is based on a story written by George R.R. Martin. You know, the "Game of Thrones" guy.
However, adding to the intrigue is the director and the studio. "Elden Ring" is being adapted by A24, everybody's favorite scrappy fake-underdog studio. A24 doesn't make blockbuster plays, but critical, arthouse-adjacent fare. Alex Garland is writing and directing the project. He's done a lot of sci-fi stuff, such as "Ex Machina" and "Annihilation," but his sensibilities can port over to fantasy.
All things considered, a different bit of video-game-adaptation news from "Jason Momoa might be in a 'Street Fighter' movie" to be sure.
