Aidy Bryant details origins of her killer Ted Cruz impersonation

You know Aidy Bryant's Ted Cruz impersonation is excellent because of how lovely she is as herself.

On Saturday Night Live, her Cruz character is spot-on as the opposite—and the best part is she never planned to embody the Texas senator.

Bryant stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night, where the host told her his favorite piece of work lately is her Cruz impersonation. "Did you know you had a Ted Cruz in you?" Fallon asked.

"I still am amazed that I'm finding him every day in there," Bryant responded. "No, I didn't know. And also, you know, normally, like, sometimes during the week you have an idea that an impression is coming up, and him in particular—it kind of sprung up on us on Friday. And so, Saturday morning I went in, and they were like, 'You're Ted Cruz. OK.'"

The 33-year-old SNL cast member continued: "And then I felt like, 'Well, OK, that'll be my only time I did Ted Cruz. And then it was like week after week. They were like, 'Get the beard out!'"

Bryant as portrayed Cruz in several different scenarios, including a visit to Tucker Carlson Tonight, but Fallon tapped her playing a freshly cornrowed and sunburnt Cruz after his controversial trip to Cancun as a favorite:

Bryant finished her Tonight Show interview by discussing the third and final season of Shrill, which she co-created and starred in, dropping on Hulu this Friday. Watch below.
