DreamWorks announced Shrek 5 is in production, over a decade after the crusty green ogre’s last outing and with the original cast reprising their roles. Shrek 5 is set for theatrical release on July 1, 2026, and as you’d expect with a release so far away, Dreamworks didn’t have much to share aside from a few teaser graphics.
The 13-second Shrek 5 announcement trailer just shows a stylized number “5” done up to look like Shrek, complete with little ear horn… things… as it hops about on screen while Smash Mouth’s “All Star” plays. In the post that accompanied the video, Dreamworks said Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), and Eddie Murphey (Donkey) will return, though the studio didn’t mention whether we can expect any other familiar faces to show up as well.
The news comes 14 years after the previous Shrek film, Shrek Forever After, debuted in theaters worldwide. Despite the fourth Shrek movie’s mixed reception among critics - some of whom praised its continually loveable characters while others pointed out its overreliance on nostalgia - it went on to become one of DreamWorks’ most successful international films and grossed approximately $752 million.
Shrek Forever After featured the ogre in a mid-life crisis and borrowed heavily from It’s A Wonderful Life, but whether Shrek 5 takes place soon after or mirrors the passing of real-world time, we’ll just have to wait and see.
