HBO Max orders two-part Brittany Murphy documentary series

Blumhouse Television and Pyramid Productions are bringing a two-part documentary series abut the life and death of late actress Brittany Murphy to life through HBO Max, Variety relayed Thursday.

Jennifer O'Connell, HBO Max's executive vice president, non-fiction and live-action family programming, offered a statement: "Our Brittany Murphy documentary cuts through the tabloid noise with an elevated, nuanced depiction of a sensational story. Crafting a grounded account of Brittany Murphy's life struggles and sudden passing comes with great responsibility and we’ve partnered with a masterful creative team to produce a thoughtful examination of a tragedy that has long been cause for speculation."

Murphy died suddenly Dec. 20, 2009, at just 32 years old. The tragedy triggered widespread speculation, despite the Los Angeles County coroner officially ruling the death as an accident caused by a combination of iron deficiency, pneumonia, and "multiple drug intoxication." The mystery was amplified when her husband, Simon Monjack, died soon after from the same causes.

Investigation Discovery explored Murphy's death in a documentary last May:

Murphy was best known for her roles in Clueless (1995), 8 Mile (2002), Just Married (2003) and King of the Hill (1997 to posthumous voiceovers in 2010).
