Marvel Comics introduces first LGBTQ Captain America character

One day after Marvel Studios confirmed Chris Evans will not reprise his Captain America role, Marvel Comics made history with the character.

"The new character, Aaron Fischer, represents the first LGBTQ character to pick up Cap's shield in the comic's 80-year history," The Hollywood Reporter relayed, as well as Marvel's official description for Fischer: "the Captain America of the Railways—a fearless teen who stepped up to protect fellow runaways and the unhoused. Marvel Comics is proud to honor Pride Month with the rise of this new LGBTQ+ hero."

Marvel's The United States of Captain America limited comic series will release in June—Pride Month—and will follow Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson and John Walker as they drive across the country searching for Cap's stolen shield. Fischer will be one of the characters they meet along the way using the shield to help their communities.

As for Captain America on the big screen, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday that Evans is done with the character in the MCU, which Evans himself hinted at as rumors began the circulate in mid-January.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a follow-up to 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, debuts on Disney Plus on Friday. The limited series follows Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) in the aftermath of Evans' Cap bidding farewell and giving Falcon his shield.
